Oh hayyy
Would you rather…. Warm Southern CA Elopement or Wintery National Park Elopement!?
During the early planning stages of engagement, you may be considering an elopement! WOO!!! So glad you found me and my page. Elopements are so much fun, and I love planning alongside couples. One of the first questions you might be asking yourself about now is would you rather…. finding the perfect location is a tough decision, so let’s break down some options. Between a warm southern CA elopement or a wintery wonderland RMNP elopement, what are the pros and cons?
When couples dream of an unforgettable elopement, two contrasting yet equally stunning locations often come to mind: the golden, rolling sands of Glamis Sand Dunes in Southern California, and the snow-draped wilderness of Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) in Colorado. Both offer unique experiences and aesthetics, but which one is right for you? Let’s dive into the pros and cons of each location to help you decide where to say “I do.”
Glamis Sand Dunes Elopement: Warmth, Drama, and Desert Romance
Pros:
Unique and Breathtaking Landscape: Glamis Sand Dunes provide an otherworldly, cinematic backdrop that is unlike any other. The endless dunes, ever-shifting with the wind, create dramatic vistas perfect for couples who want something adventurous and visually stunning.
Year-Round Warm Weather: Southern California’s Glamis Sand Dunes boast consistently warm weather, making it an ideal location for couples wanting to avoid the unpredictability of colder climates. Even in the winter months, temperatures can be comfortable, allowing for lighter attire and more relaxed outdoor ceremonies.
Golden Hour Magic: The desert light, especially during sunrise or sunset, creates warm, glowing tones that add a dream-like quality to photos. The sun casts long shadows and illuminates the sands with soft, golden hues, making for jaw-dropping images.
Cons:
Remote Location and Limited Amenities: Glamis Sand Dunes are remote, and accessing the area can be a challenge. There are limited facilities, which means no luxury lodges or on-site accommodations. Couples will need to plan for portable necessities and transportation, as well as nearby lodging, which can be up to an hour away.
Harsh Desert Conditions: While the dunes can be beautiful, the desert is not for everyone. High temperatures during the day, especially in summer, can make it uncomfortable. Sandstorms or windy conditions may also arise, making it challenging for both guests and photographers to handle.
Rocky Mountain National Park Elopement: Winter Wonderland Romance
Pros:
Spectacular Mountain Views: RMNP is a nature lover’s paradise. Majestic snow-covered peaks, evergreen forests, and pristine alpine lakes make for a picture-perfect setting. The towering mountains create a sense of grandeur and awe, ideal for couples looking for a fairytale winter backdrop.
Charming Winter Aesthetic: For couples dreaming of a cozy, winter wonderland elopement, RMNP is unmatched. Snowy vistas paired with winter attire—think fur wraps, snow boots, and wool coats—can create a magical and intimate atmosphere. Hot cocoa and fireside moments add to the charm of a winter wedding.
Wildlife and Natural Beauty: RMNP is home to a variety of wildlife, from elk and bighorn sheep to birds and smaller mammals. For nature lovers, this can add a unique element to the day. Even in winter, the park’s beauty is diverse and vibrant, offering unforgettable photo opportunities.
Rustic Mountain Lodges: Unlike Glamis, RMNP offers nearby lodges and cabins where couples and guests can retreat after the ceremony. The comfort of a roaring fire and cozy accommodations makes for a warm contrast to the outdoor winter experience.
Cons:
Cold and Unpredictable Weather: Winter in RMNP can be harsh. Temperatures drop significantly, and snowstorms can roll in unexpectedly. Couples will need to be prepared for frigid conditions, and those uncomfortable with the cold might find it difficult to enjoy the full experience.
Limited Accessibility in Winter: Some areas of the park may be inaccessible due to snow or road closures, limiting options for elopement locations. The high elevation also means couples and guests might experience altitude sickness, which can be an additional challenge during the celebration.
Planning Challenges: Winter weddings in RMNP require careful planning. You may need permits for certain locations, and contingency plans for extreme weather are essential. Transportation can also be tricky, as snowy roads may require 4-wheel drive or chains, complicating travel logistics.
