Payson, Arizona, nestled in the heart of the Mogollon Rim, is the perfect destination for couples dreaming of an intimate campground wedding surrounded by nature’s beauty. As a photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing many such heartfelt celebrations, and I’m here to share some tips to help you plan your special day.
The first obvious step in planning a campground wedding is the research into which campground to book out. Houston Mesa Campground is an excellent choice for an intimate wedding. Located just a few miles from Payson, it offers a blend of convenience and natural beauty.
The campground features spacious group sites perfect for small gatherings, shaded areas beneath towering pines, and amenities like restrooms and picnic tables. Be sure to reserve your site well in advance and confirm with the campground host if additional permits are required for a wedding ceremony.
One of the best parts of a campground wedding is the natural decor, and Houston Mesa Campground doesn’t disappoint. Let the surrounding pines and open skies set the stage for your celebration. For seating, consider wooden benches or hay bales draped in soft fabric. Add a touch of warmth with lanterns or string lights (check out the reception photos!!) as the sun sets. Keep your decor simple and cohesive with the natural surroundings—think greenery garlands, wildflower bouquets, and wooden accents.
Hosting a wedding at any campground (including Houston Mesa) requires a bit of planning, but the results are worth it. Ensure there are enough restroom facilities for guests, or consider renting portable restrooms if needed. If you’re serving food, look into hiring a catering service familiar with outdoor events, or opt for a casual picnic-style meal. Bring plenty of water to keep everyone hydrated, especially during warmer months. Don’t forget to pack extra supplies like sunscreen, bug spray, and blankets for cooler evenings.
Also, let’s talk timing. The best time for a wedding at Houston Mesa Campground is during the spring or fall. Spring brings blooming wildflowers and cool breezes, while autumn paints the landscape in vibrant hues of red and gold. Avoid the peak summer months, as temperatures can soar, and the campground tends to be busier. For those magical golden-hour photos, schedule your ceremony an hour or two before sunset when the light is soft and dreamy.
Seriously, you won’t regret this. Boudoir is a fun way to loosen up with your photographer before your intimate campground wedding experience! Additionally, it’s a great way to boost your confidence in front of the lens.
This couple chose to do a spicy little reveal in the woods after the ceremony between just the two of them. With the help of her online gallery, the bride certainly shocked the groom! They had a lot of fun looking at the images together.
If you didn’t already know, I also offer boudoir, so let’s get you on the books!
