Arizona has no shortage of incredible places for engagement photos. If you’re still deciding where to take your engagement photos, you might also enjoy my guide to the best Arizona wedding locations, where I break down some of my favorite landscapes across the state. Seriously, you could throw a dart at a map and probably land somewhere gorgeous. (Okay, maybe don’t actually do that. You might accidentally end up in someone’s backyard.) But there’s a reason Sedona engagement photos have taken over so many Pinterest boards.
Towering red rocks, endless overlooks, glowing sunsets, and dramatic desert landscapes make it feel like you’ve stepped into another world. Every direction looks like it belongs on a postcard, but what makes Sedona engagement photos so special isn’t just the scenery. It’s the experience.
Some couples spend the evening hiking to an epic overlook and watching the sun disappear behind the cliffs. Others wander through the red rocks before grabbing tacos in town afterward. (Which is a pretty solid way to end a date.)

Whether you’ve already decided on Sedona or you’re still narrowing down locations for your Arizona engagement photos, this guide covers everything you need to know, from the best seasons and what to wear to my favorite locations (including everything you should know before heading to Merry Go Round Rock).
Because the goal isn’t just pretty engagement photos in front of red rocks. It’s creating a little adventure together, the kind where you laugh in the Jeep, change shoes at the trailhead, watch the desert turn gold, and talk about the whole thing for years.
Arizona is full of incredible places for engagement photos, which is honestly both a blessing and a curse. You have so many amazing options that narrowing it down can feel impossible. So, why do so many couples end up choosing Sedona?

Simple. There’s nowhere else quite like it.
The red rock formations are ICONIC for a reason. Pictures don’t really prepare you for just how massive and colorful they are until you’re standing right in the middle of them. Every overlook, winding trail, and scenic drive feels a little different, giving you so much variety without needing to spend your entire session driving from place to place. In one evening, we can capture dramatic cliffs, glowing desert landscapes, towering rock formations, and wide-open views that make your gallery feel like it was photographed in multiple locations.
Another reason couples love Sedona is how versatile it is. You can go from an adventurous overlook to a quiet desert trail without ever feeling like you’re taking the same photo twice.

The scenery definitely steals the show, but what makes Sedona engagement photos stand out is how naturally the evening unfolds. There’s no rushing from pose to pose or watching the clock. Instead, we spend the evening exploring, laughing when the wind decides your hair has other plans, taking in the views, and creating photos that remind you exactly what it felt like to be there together.
Years from now, I don’t want you to just remember how beautiful Sedona looked. I want you to remember how much fun you had together while you were there.
I’ll save you some trial and error; not every season in Sedona is created equal. While it’s generally cooler than Phoenix, it still sits in the Arizona desert. That means your experience can look completely different depending on what time of year you visit.

If your schedule is flexible, spring is such an incredible time for Sedona engagement photos. The temperatures are comfortable, the desert starts waking up after winter, and the evenings are perfect for exploring without feeling like you’re racing back to the car for air conditioning.
It’s also one of the easiest seasons for adventurous locations like Merry Go Round Rock, since the weather is usually ideal for hiking and spending time outdoors.
Fall is another AMAZING choice. The summer crowds begin to settle down, temperatures become much more enjoyable, and those golden-hour sunsets somehow become even dreamier.
If you’ve been picturing warm light wrapping around the red rocks while you laugh your way through an adventure session…this is probably the season you’re imagining.

Winter is honestly one of Arizona’s best-kept secrets. Most people don’t associate Sedona with winter, but cooler temperatures make hiking much more enjoyable. And every once in a while, the red rocks get dusted with snow.
If you’ve never seen bright red cliffs covered in fresh snow, trust me. It’s SO worth adding to your bucket list.
Okay, let’s have a heart-to-heart. Summer in Sedona is…toasty. Yes, it’s cooler than Phoenix. No, that doesn’t mean it’s cool. Afternoons regularly climb into the 90s, and if we’re hiking to an overlook or bouncing around in a Jeep, you’ll definitely feel it.

If summer is your only option, don’t panic! We just need to be strategic. I always recommend scheduling your session for sunset when temperatures are lower, the light is softer, and the red rocks start glowing. It’s more comfortable for everyone, and honestly, the photos are so much better.
If you’re planning more than just engagement photos, many of these same seasonal tips apply to weddings and elopements too. I dive even deeper into permits, locations, and timelines in my guide to planning an elopement in Arizona.
Some couples know exactly where they want their session before they ever inquire. Others simply know they love Sedona and have absolutely no idea where to start. The good news? You don’t have to.

The “best” location isn’t necessarily the most famous one. It’s the one that fits the kind of experience you want. If you’re dreaming of adventure, Merry Go Round Rock is hard to beat.
Maybe you’re curious about what the drive is actually like, what kind of vehicle you’ll need, or what to expect once you get there, I put together a complete Merry Go Round Rock guide that covers everything you need to know before your session.

If you’d rather have easy access and incredible views, Bell Rock or Airport Mesa might be a better fit. Looking for something quiet and romantic? Red Rock Crossing is always a favorite.
That’s why I help every couple choose a location based on their vision, not just what’s trending on Instagram.
If you’ve spent more than five minutes looking up Sedona engagement photos, chances are you’ve already seen Merry Go Round Rock. Honestly, every time I take couples there, someone says, “Wait…THIS is where we’re taking photos?” The views somehow manage to be even better in person. Perched high above Sedona, this overlook gives you panoramic views of the red rocks that seem to stretch on forever. At sunset, the whole landscape starts shifting into orange, pink, and gold, and suddenly everyone understands why photographers will happily bounce down a very questionable road to get there.

If you’re already dreaming about saying your vows here instead of just taking engagement photos, you’ll definitely want to check out my complete guide on how to elope in Sedona. It covers everything from permits and planning to choosing the best locations for your wedding day.
But here’s what most guides don’t tell you: getting there is part of the adventure. The road to Merry Go Round Rock isn’t paved, and it’s definitely not something I’d recommend tackling in your everyday sedan. The trail requires a high-clearance 4×4 vehicle, with plenty of bumps, rocks, and a few moments that might have you laughing (or questioning my driving skills).
The good news? You don’t have to rent a Jeep just for your session. I drive one myself, which means we’ll head up the trail together, enjoy the ride, and skip the stress of figuring out transportation. It becomes part of the date. We spend the drive talking, laughing, pointing out different rock formations, and by the time we reach the overlook, it already feels like we’ve shared an adventure together before the camera even comes out.

Once we park, there’s a short hike to the overlook. It’s nothing overly technical, but you’ll definitely want comfortable shoes for the walk out. (I always tell couples to bring hiking shoes and change into their photo shoes once we get there. Your ankles, and your white sneakers, will thank you.)
I almost always recommend planning your session around sunset. Not only are the temperatures much more comfortable, but this is when the light wraps around the cliffs and makes the entire landscape glow. It’s the kind of light photographers dream about. And if weather and flight conditions cooperate, we’ll even get the drone in the air.

Seeing yourselves surrounded by miles of towering red rock formations from above is something that’s hard to put into words. Those aerial images add such a unique perspective to your gallery and really show just how incredible this landscape is. If you’re dreaming of an adventurous session that feels like more than just taking photos, Merry Go Round Rock is hard to beat.
It’s the kind of place where the journey is just as memorable as the destination, and that’s exactly what makes it so special.
One of the biggest questions I get before every session is, “What should we wear?” The good news is that Sedona does a lot of the heavy lifting. If you’ve been comparing locations for your Arizona engagement photos, you’ll quickly notice that Sedona’s warm red rocks pair beautifully with earthy, neutral colors, making outfit planning surprisingly easy.

I always recommend sticking with colors that complement the landscape instead of competing with it. Basically, choose colors that feel like they belong in the landscape instead of colors that look like they’re trying to fight the red rocks for attention. These colors photograph beautifully against the red rocks and create a timeless look you’ll still love years from now.
If you’re hoping for a dressier vibe, long flowy dresses photograph beautifully here, especially if there’s a little breeze. For guys, neutral button-downs, sweaters, or well-fitted layers always look great without feeling too formal.

One thing I’d avoid? Neon colors or busy patterns. They’re fun in real life, but they tend to pull attention away from what makes Sedona so special: you two and those incredible views.
Don’t stress if putting outfits together isn’t exactly your thing. Once you’re booked, I’m always happy to help you narrow down options so you feel confident before your session.
If the thought of being in front of a camera makes you a little nervous, you’re definitely not alone. Probably 90% of my couples tell me some version of, “We’re awkward,” before their session starts. Spoiler alert: they’ve all been wrong.

My goal isn’t to have you stand perfectly still and smile at the camera for an hour. I’d much rather create an experience where you’re actually interacting with each other. We’ll walk, explore, laugh, probably make a few terrible jokes (mostly from me), and I’ll guide you the entire time with prompts that feel natural instead of stiff poses.
If we’re heading somewhere adventurous like Merry Go Round Rock, we’ll take our time getting there. There’s no rush to sprint to the overlook. Half the fun is enjoying the drive, taking in the scenery, and letting the evening unfold naturally. By the end of your session, most couples tell me they forgot they were even having their pictures taken.
That’s exactly the goal.
While Merry Go Round Rock gets a lot of attention (for good reason), there are plenty of incredible spots for Sedona engagement photos. If you’re trying to decide where to take your Arizona engagement photos, the best location really comes down to the kind of experience you’re hoping for.

One of the easier locations to access with beautiful red rock backdrops. It’s a great choice if you want incredible views without committing to a longer hike.
Best for: Easy access with beautiful scenery

If you’ve ever seen photos with Cathedral Rock reflected in the water, there’s a good chance they were taken here. It’s peaceful, easy to explore, and especially beautiful during golden hour.
If you’re drawn to mountain scenery more than desert landscapes, Flagstaff is another incredible option. I put together an entire guide comparing what makes Northern Arizona such an amazing place for adventurous sessions and elopements.
Best for: Romantic, peaceful engagement sessions
One of the best panoramic overlooks in Sedona. Sunset here is absolutely stunning and gives you sweeping views of the surrounding red rock landscape.
Best for: Couples wanting panoramic views without a long hike

That’s where I come in! Choosing a location for your Arizona engagement photos can feel overwhelming when there are so many incredible options, but you don’t have to figure it out alone.
Whether you’re dreaming of a Jeep adventure to Merry Go Round Rock or a relaxed evening wandering through the red rocks, we’ll find the spot that feels the most like you.
If you’re dreaming of an engagement session that feels more like an adventure than a photoshoot, there’s a good chance the answer is yes. Sedona engagement photos are perfect for couples who love exploring new places, don’t mind a little dirt on their shoes, and would rather spend an evening chasing a sunset than posing in front of a studio backdrop.

That doesn’t mean you have to be an experienced hiker or spend every weekend camping.
Some of my couples are outdoorsy enough to own hiking boots for every occasion. Others are just excited for an excuse to explore somewhere new together. Both make for incredible sessions. The biggest thing is being open to the experience.
Maybe that means hopping in my Jeep to head toward Merry Go Round Rock. Maybe it’s wandering a quiet trail while the red rocks start glowing around us. Or maybe it’s ending the evening with tacos and margaritas because you worked up an appetite after all that adventuring. (Honestly, that’s becoming one of my favorite post-session traditions.)
The best engagement sessions aren’t about perfectly posed photos.
They’re about laughing until your cheeks hurt, watching the sunset together, getting a little dusty along the way, and walking back to the Jeep thinking, “That was actually so much fun.”
The photos are just the proof that you were there.
I recommend reaching out at least 2-4 months in advance, especially if you’re hoping for a spring or fall session. Those seasons are the most popular, and sunset availability tends to book first.
Some locations in Sedona require permits, while others don’t. The requirements can also change depending on the location and whether commercial photography is involved. Don’t worry, I help my couples navigate all of that so you don’t have to spend hours researching permit regulations.
Absolutely! If your location allows dogs, I’m always happy to include your four-legged family member. Just let me know ahead of time so we can choose a pet-friendly location and plan for a few extra treats and water breaks.
Most of my engagement sessions last around 60–90 minutes, depending on the location and whether we’re heading somewhere adventurous like Merry Go Round Rock.
You’re in good company.
Most of my couples tell me they’re awkward in front of the camera before we even start. My job is to guide you through the entire session with prompts and movement that feel natural, so you can focus on each other instead of wondering what to do with your hands.
If you’ve made it this far, I’m guessing Sedona is already living rent-free in your brain. I get it.

Whether you’re dreaming of a Jeep adventure to Merry Go Round Rock, a relaxed sunset session at Bell Rock, or a location you haven’t even heard of yet, I’d love to help you plan Sedona engagement photos that feel like an actual experience, not just another thing on your wedding checklist.
I’ll help you choose the right location, plan around the best light, figure out outfits, navigate permits when needed, and guide you through the whole session so you never have to wonder what to do with your hands. All you have to do is show up, love on your person, and enjoy the adventure.
